Keppel Seghers Engineering Singapore Pte Ltd (KSES) has applied POTABLOCTM, its mobile water treatment and production unit, to produce high quality industrial grade water as part of the construction of Doha North Sewage Treatment Works (DNSTW).
Instead of drawing valuable potable water from the city of Doha, POTABLOCTM will recycle wastewater to provide the main source of water needed for the project construction. Keppel Seghers’ POTABLOCTM will produce up to 600m3/day of recycled water from the tertiary treated effluent from Al Thakira sewage treatment plant.
Chua Chee Wui, CEO of Keppel Integrated Engineering, said, “In line with Keppel’s green philosophy, we proposed our innovative water reuse technology, POTABLOCTM, as it will reduce the dependency on Qatar’s potable water for our non-potable water needs. This is the first such water reuse method employed in Qatar.
“Countries experiencing rapid development require vast amounts of resources, such as water, to support their growth. Communities worldwide are learning that through water management and technology, we are able to literally create new sources of water.” Chee Wui added.
Mr Khalid Mohammed Al Emadi, Director of Quality, Safety and Environment, Public Works Authority, said, “Spearheading the transformation and the development of the public infrastructure in Qatar, Ashghal seeks to enhance the quality of lives in a sustainable manner. The use of proven technology to produce high grade industrial water for construction, and therefore freeing up more potable water for the citizens of Qatar, is a demonstration of Ashghal’s progressive efforts to develop Qatar’s public infrastructure to world class standards.”
Lim Chiow Giap, Project Director for DNSTW, said, “As a partner of Ashghal for water sustainability, Keppel is committed to support their vision of sustainable development by providing innovative solutions for Qatari community.”
The application of POTABLOCTM to the project construction is not only commercially-viable but more importantly, it supports Qatar’s efforts for sustainable development.
KSES was awarded the QR3.6 billion (approximately S$1.5 billion) design, build and 10-year operation and maintenance contract for the largest wastewater treatment and reuse and sludge treatment facility in the Middle East in September 2007 by Ashghal, the Public Works Authority of Qatar.
POTABLOCTM is an innovative self-sustaining and mobile water production unit that produces high quality water from unconventional sources including, seawater or brackish water through technologically advanced separation techniques such as ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis.
Developed for the production of potable water and process water for industrial applications from seawater, brackish surface water, well water, or even effluent biological, POTABLOCTM is designed to fit into containerised units for ease of transportation and quick assembly of units on site.
About Doha North Sewage Treatment Works (DNSTW)
The Doha North Sewage Treatment Works is expected to be operational in 2010. With peak design capacity to treat wastewater of up to 439,000 cubic metres per day, this will be the largest wastewater treatment and reuse facility in Qatar, more than triple the capacity of the next largest wastewater treatment plant.
The sludge treatment plant in the DNSTW will be the only sludge treatment plant in Qatar. It will receive and treat sludge from wastewater treatment plants all over Qatar. The treated sludge can be used as an organic fertiliser or as a supplementary green source of energy.
With its forte in water and thermal recycling, KSES is able to offer a complete ecologically-friendly design for the DNSTW. KSES will apply in-house know-how and technology in water and thermal treatment processes, ranging from advanced biological water treatment processes to membrane filtration to produce high quality water for reuse, and thermal drying processes to treat the wastewater sludge. The DNSTW will have advanced odour control systems to minimise its impact on the surrounding communities.
