NEWATER MEMBRANE FILTRATION | MEMSTILL® MEMBRANE DISTILLATION
For treatment of wastewater in such a way that it becomes useable as process water for industrial applications or even as drinking water, Keppel Seghers has developped a series of advanced membrane technologies.
Combined micro filtration, ultra filtration and reverse osmosis (RO-membranes) make Keppel Seghers' membranes very efficient for removal of salt, bacteria and viruses.
The installations are custom-built according to the customer's specific needs.

NEWATER is developed to produce drinking water according to WHO standards and process water for industrial applications, starting from the effluent of a wastewater treatment plant.

Description
The NEWATER process is commonly based on today's advanced membrane technology and takes mostly place in two fundamental stages: microfiltration and reverse osmosis.
- Microfiltration removes particles in the 0.1-10.0 micrometer range.
- Reverse osmosis removes dissolved salts and low molecular weight organic materials. Bacteria, viruses and pathogens are retained on the reverse osmosis step.
In specific situations, microfiltration can be replaced by ultrafiltration.
Pre-treatment depends very much on the feed water quality. Post-treatment depends on the water quality to be achieved. If drinking water is to be produced, there should at least be a disinfecting step, either through UV or through chlorination.

Description
Cold seawater flows through a condenser with non-permeable walls. Subsequently it flows through a heat exchanger, and from there into the membrane evaporator. The wall of the evaporator is a micro-porous hydrophobic membrane through which water vapour can diffuse and by which liquid water (with dissolved salts) is retained.
Membrane distillation differs from other membrane technologies in that the driving force for desalination is the difference in vapour pressure of water across the membrane, rather than total pressure. The vapour pressure gradient is created by heating the source water.
The membranes for membrane distillation are microporous and hydrophobic.
At the moment two pilot plants are in production, each of them delivering 2 m³/h.
