Doha North Sewage Treatment Works, Qatar

Landmark international wastewater treatment and water reuse contract won by a Singapore company
Keppel Seghers, the environmental engineering arm of Keppel Integrated Engineering, is privileged to partner the Public Works Authority of Qatar to develop Doha North Sewage Treatment Works (Doha North (STW).

When completed in 2010, this landmark project will be the largest Greenfield wastewater treatment, water reuse and sludge treatment plant in Qatar and the Middle East. With a peak design capacity to treat wastewater of up to 439,000 cubic metres per day, Doha North STW will serve a projected population of over 900,000 (in year 2020).

The sludge treatment plant in the Doha North facility will be the only sludge treatment plant in Qatar. It will receive and treat sludge from wastewater treatment plants all over Qatar. The treated sludge can be used as an organic fertilizer or as a supplementary green source of energy.

The First of its Kind
As a Design-Build-Operate project, Keppel Seghers will design and build Doha North STW, and subsequently operate the works for a period of 10 years.

Doha North STW achieves several firsts:

• the first wastewater treatment facility in Qatar to use advanced membrane and ultra-violet treatment technologies to reclaim high quality water for non-potable purposes;
• the first facility with comprehensive odour control system to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment;
• the first facility equipped with modern sludge treatment processes to receive and treat sludge generated from just Doha North STW but all other sewage treatment works in Qatar;
• the 4km-by-4km buffer zone surrounding the STW will be carefully landscaped to form a lush-green oasis for the community to enjoy and appreciate, a first of its kind in Qatar.

A Model Project for International Water Community
Doha North STW serves as a model project of sustainable development for communities worldwide. Incoming wastewater will be treated to international standards for safe disposal and for re-use. The facility will be a source of water supply for non-potable use, thereby freeing up precious drinking water supply for the community. Treated sludge can be used as soil conditioner for planting purposes.

Doha North STW draws the best ideas from multiple global agencies to address the challenges of water sustainability and sustainable development through the use of sophisticated technologies and cost-effective integrated water solutions.
