Keppel to handle almost half of Singapore’s total volume of waste sent for incineration

Keppel Integrated Engineering Limited (KIE) has commenced commercial operations for Keppel Seghers Tuas Waste-to-Energy Plant (KS Tuas WTE Plant).

Together with Senoko Waste-to-Energy Plant (Senoko WTE Plant)¹ , KIE will be able to treat up to 47.6% the total volume of waste that was sent for incineration² in Singapore.

KS Tuas WTE Plant is Singapore’s first waste-to-energy plant to be built under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative. Able to treat 800 tonnes of solid waste a day to generate more than 20 MW of green energy, the plant will be owned and operated by KIE’s wholly owned subsidiary, Keppel Seghers Tuas Waste-To-Energy Plant Pte Ltd for 25 years.

Mr Michael Chia, Deputy Chairman of KIE, said, “Keppel has become the only private operator of waste-to-energy plants in Singapore with our two waste-to-energy plants. Our participation in such projects will provide a steady and recurring income for the Group.

“As it is also the first plant in Singapore to feature waste-to-energy technology from a local company, it enables us to not only showcase Keppel’s technology and expertise to the world but also support the government's vision to develop Singapore as an environmental hub.”

Earlier in August this year, KIE completed the acquisition of Senoko WTE Plant from the Singapore Government. With Senoko WTE Plant’s capacity to treat 2,400 tonnes of waste per day, KIE, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Senoko Waste-to-Energy Pte Ltd, will provide incineration services to the National Environment Agency for 15 years.

Notably, in the Middle East, Keppel Seghers Group is implementing two contracts worth approximately S$1.7 billion by the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning of Qatar for the EPC and Operation and Maintenance of an integrated solid waste management facility which can treat 2,300 tonnes of waste per day.


¹ Senoko WTE Plant is owned by Senoko Trust, which is wholly-owned by K-Green Trust. K-Green Trust is in turn            wholly-owned by KIE.
² According to the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, 2.45 million tonnes of waste were sent for incineration in 2008.
