1. Feedstock for Waste-to-Energy installations:
The pulverised waste is screened into several fractions and the organic fraction is separated. The refuse derived fuel (RDF) that is obtained is perfectly suited to energy recovery
2. Material recovery facilities:
The pulverised material can be divided into two or even three fractions. Each of the fractions can be further treated in order to sort out valuable materials such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The middle fraction contains most of the metals and the size limitation enables efficient ferrous and non-ferrous metals recovery.
3. Anaerobic digestion / Composting:
The soft pulverisation process inside the drum prepares the waste for maximum separation of the organic fraction and conditions the organic particulates for the biological processes of anaerobic digestion or composting. The food, animal and garden waste as well as the paper and cardboard are subjected to selective size reduction which increases the quantity of biodegradable materials and considerably reduces the contamination of the biodegradable fraction.
4. Volume reduction (transfer stations, landfills):
Beneficial prior to landfill, the pulverisation process increases the bulk density of the waste with a factor of 2 to 3. This volume reduction can result in major cost savings in transportation and allows for longer use of a landfill site. Inorganic material is deposited in the lowest layers and covered by organic matter. This results in an economically and environmentally acceptable method of sanitary landfill with rapid consolidation. The use of the undersize fraction as an intermediate landfill cover spares the need to import landfill cover material. Biogas production from the landfill therefore occurs much sooner.

Description
Waste is a heterogeneous mixture of different solid products. Its composition varies widely according to its origin, the region or country in which the waste is produced, the time of the year and the waste collection methods used.
The Keppel Seghers DANO DRUM is a horizontally mounted, rotating steel cylinder which automatically shreds, mixes and sorts the refuse into components for either recycling, biological processing or combustion with energy recovery and landfilling.
A single drum has a capacity of 20 tonnes per hour of waste, in a continuous operation. The rotation of the drum, at 3.6 revolutions per minute, leads to a breakdown of the softer components by particle collision and attrition, as they repeatedly contact the drum wall and the harder elements in the mixture.
The physical breakdown of the soft organic material in the Keppel Seghers DANO DRUM creates a material with a very large surface area which is of great benefit in any biological degradation process and also makes it easy to screen and separate the organic fraction from the higher calorific value (and harder) waste components.
On exiting the drum, the materials pass over a rotary screen section where the organic and inert fractions are effectively separated. The outputs of pre-treatment fall into three main fractions:
- an organic fraction,
- a high calorific fraction, and
- a predominantly inert mineral fraction.
