Faced with the world’s growing need for alternative resources, pollution risks, as well as declining water supply, Keppel Integrated Engineering (KIE), the environmental technology and engineering division of Keppel Corp, is poised to provide innovative solutions in waste disposal, water treatment and power generation.

Leveraging its technological expertise, best practices and processes, KIE aims to deliver state-of-the-art technologies and management systems that are cost effective and safe to use.
KIE is actively involved in several quality infrastructure projects together with local and foreign communities. These include the Qatar Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre, the Tuas South Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Plant and the Ulu Pandan NEWater Plant.
The company’s present R&D efforts are focused on application development and process improvement, with a number of projects at the pilot or demonstration stage.
In early 2007, KIE announced plans to further its R&D work through the setting up of the Keppel Environmental Technology Centre that will drive and co-ordinate the company’s R&D programmes.
In Singapore, KIE has established research partnerships with both the National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Technological University. Adding to this list of global research partners are Cranfield University in the UK and Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research in Holland.
The fruits of these heavy investments in R&D have begun to surface. In water solutions, the company succeeded in the design, construction and operation of the world’s second largest wastewater recycling plant in Singapore. It has also carried out the pilot run of the new Memstill® desalination technology, which will improve the economy and efficiency of the existing desalination technology for seawater and brackish water.
In solid waste solutions, the company strengthened its portfolio of 130 intellectual properties (IPs) and trademarks in 2006 with the successful patent of three new IPs for solid waste technologies, one of which is for Keppel Seghers’s PRISM for WTE installations. The company also won a landmark project from the Qatar Government to design, build and operate the first integrated waste management facility in the country.
Looking ahead, KIE’s initiatives will include preparing Keppel Seghers for the ISO:14000 environment management systems and standards certification, as well as offering energy audits to help properties meet the Building and Construction Authority’s Green Mark award standards for building efficiency and eco-conservation.
KIE will also focus on the technological application of its resource efficient products, in particular Keppel Seghers’s flue gas treatment and wastewater treatment systems. The company will continue to explore alternative renewable energy resources as well as opportunities for green technology investment and partnerships.
In addition, KIE is also placing strong emphasis on staff outreach platforms such as seminars, forums, newsletters and special events to foster a ‘green’ corporate culture and to promote a safe working environment.
